Was not a fan. Wish the professor had given a few trigger warnings.

this book. this book!!! i do not exaggerate in the slightest when i say that it has been life changing to see myself and my own relationship with gender represented so clearly and directly with jess.

i urge anyone entering into this book (especially if you are LGBT+ and/or a survivor of violence) to thoroughly look into the content warnings provided by myself other users - there are multiple scenes of homophobic and transphobic police brutality and sexual violence against almost all of the main characters. although none of these scenes are exploitative or voyeuristic, they are explicit, and i worry that many readers will go into the book unaware of how heavy the content quickly becomes, like i did.

i’ve seen this book on many “LGBT media” recommendation lists, even some aimed towards young teenagers, next to YA novels and rom-coms with zero context or advance warning about the content, and that alarms me. it’s been extremely encouraging to see conversations taking place about the need for more detail/actual plot summaries on these types of LGBT+ and/or race-focused rec lists, and i hope that we can improve on how we review and recommend media to each other.

that is all, please visit lesliefeinberg.net to learn more about this book (and have access to a free PDF copy!).
