Somehow I missed out on this book when I was a kid, but better late than never. It’s so much fun!
I decided to read this after my 9 year old daughter read it and enjoyed it. I also enjoyed it. It was a mystery.
About 90% sure I read this as a kid and loved it. Didn't hold up quite as well as an adult.

This was a childhood classic for me, I decided to re-read it because I remembered loving it so much in elementary school, it did not disappoint. The characters in this book are fun, funny, and happy. Watching them as they explore their imagination and work together to build a fantasy world is so fun. My dad loved this book when he was a kid and so did I. For that reason, I would recommend this book to parents or younger audiences. My golden line from this book is "But a bright and beautiful blur, no matter how distant, was better than a reality that was dull and gray." (Snyder, 51) I just love this quote, the diction, rhythm, and imagery are so beautiful, Snyder is such a beautiful writer.
This was one of my absolute favorite books as a kid, and (as a reread) it definitely lived up to my high expectations.
I know I read this when I was a kid, but I remembered nothing. It's kind of a simplistic little YA vignette, though there is some actual drama later in the book. I was impressed by the diverse cast of characters and the way the kids model such good interactions. Very sweet.

it’s bizarre how a book from your childhood can stick with you so much that you remember the details of the disturbing illustrations and the specific names of the characters and how your fourth grade class named the pet parakeet petey in honor of the bird in the book… and also how scary it was when you thought the professor was about to kidnap and murder the kids?!?? 😵
i for SURE had an egypt-fascination era as a kid (anyone else?!) — there was a cleopatra halloween costume, a hieroglyphics book i tried to learn how to write from, even a chicken mummification extra credit project that went horribly wrong in the backyard at one point… 🤢
but about the book, it definitely had a dark tone to it and some heavy/somber themes, and probably wouldn’t be one i’d readily share with kiddos now, but it’s an award winner and a classic, so what do i know!
