I think for an alternative ending to the original story it was really good. I read it as a great way to look at what is needed for survival. If Paulsen was going for real rather than realistic it wouldn't work. Even experts die in those conditions.
I never wanted Hatchet to end and the same held true for this sequel. Brilliantly conveyed, with a lasting appeal after all these years.
When I started to read this book I though the end of the first book was so good and didn't I would like the changed ending. I did. This book is just about as good as the first book. Maybe just about as good is not right. In the first book Brian is trying to live. Everything is about living another day. In this book it is about living better. It doesn't seem that every move is a life or death move. These are short books and take no time at all to read. So enjoy!
It was kind-of good. I guess I like romance horror novels too much or something, but I really didn't care for this book. I just read it in 4th grade because it was an assignment.

I read this book today in memory of Gary Paulsen who died yesterday, October 13th, 2021. This book really didn't do what the previous two did. In the introduction, Paulsen says that this book is a "what-if." What if Brian hadn't been rescued by the man in the plane at the end of Hatchet and had to survive the winter? A cool concept, I guess. A cool exercise, but because of that context, the book felt less urgent and engaging. The details were cool, but I wasn't as invested in the story as I was with Hatchet and The River.

A bit funnier than the first book, which I appreciated - and manages to not feel too much like merely more of the same. I read it on a whim, but I don't regret the hour or so it took.

Great to see how Brian made out in a winter.
I easily get lost in the inner thoughts with my own thoughts, so that's why my favorite thus far is #2, The River since there's a second character
