This was a fantastic adult debut by Leigh Bardugo, I was genuinely impressed. It was a bit of a rocky start with the time jumps but about 80 pages in it definitely came into its own. Great magic system in the contemporary world, great mysteries surrounding the characters, and the plot twists were brilliant.

The concept for this book is well thought-out: Alex is a young girl plagued by ghosts, both metaphorical and literal, who finds herself with a free pass to one of the most prestigious universities as a result of her gift, and also where finds herself in the midst of at least 3 murder mysteries. However, at times the chapters were too long, paragraphs too clunky or generally too wordy. Her roommate characters were also super forgettable and definitely plot devices.

I would highly recommend checking your trigger warnings for this because there are some heavy topics and triggering scenes in here if you are unprepared.

Schools for magic but based in the real world and specifically Yale and some real consequences. Kind of feels like a bit of Constantine with all of the references of tools of work they do. Has themes of classism, sexual assault, drug abuse, ghosts and magic school rules.

Took me a while to get into the story, but once I did it was exceptional. Couldn't set the book down. I am madly in love with Alex and honestly couldn't have expected the plot twist. Amazing writing style as well. Beware though, it was very graphic at times, so definitely not for the faint of heart in my opinion.

A fantastic read, highly dark and thrilling take on dark academia with the fantasy element woven in beautifully although with that being said the critique of academia was better explored through class and privilege rather than it was through how race would play a part in that.
the bathroom scene and depictions of SA seemed out of no where and felt there more for the shock factor
on the whole a 4.5 star read and can’t wait to read Hellbent 😊

Heed trigger warnings!

Bardugo’s venture into adult fantasy was a good read! Weirdly predictable in the end, but still enjoyable. I’ll be reading Hellbent!

Going to sleep on it because I loooved reading this but I have gripes

- I almost gave up on the intro because I could not get my bearings for maybe 50-100 pages. Seeing that in a lot of reviews now I kind of hate the time jumping but I also kind of love it.. but it was too much at the beginning for a first book in the series. I went back to the first chapter once the timeline caught up and only then did it make sense. Definitely need more time to slowly give introductions when I think a character like Alex (like Harry Potter or a similar “omg what there’s this whole hidden world character) should be such an easy vehicle for excusable exposition - I liked the chapter breaks of the Lethe book but I didn’t even understand what Lethe was until chapter 3. The atmosphere was there but also with the writing style being atmospheric I couldn’t figure out what was real or a metaphor for a long time. I thought the first chapter was an apocalypse situation.

- idk I haven’t seen in other reviews but it felt kind of 2015 feminism to me IDK !!!!!  loved parts of the callouts to frat and rape culture but some of it felt heavy handed and tripe. Last sequence especially had me disappointed
because why have Daisy be the Big Bad when the greedy old white man was right there!!! I get the callout to white feminism but idk felt way more like a book 2 kind of theme.

- last 50? (Ebook so not sure) pages and the final climax left me super disappointed. One too many twists. Wrong Big Bad.

Still can’t wait to get a library card so I can devour hellbent tho

I had some trouble getting into the story at first (between the flashbacks, the prompts, the writing style, and the time it took to lay a useful foundation), but once I got about a third in, the plot roots were cemented.

This story is very twisty in a fun and interesting way. There is a lot of violence and vivid descriptions of assault which is definitely not everyone’s jam.
