This was a surprise. The book is still too long and could do with some trimming, but the story and characters are interesting and complex. This book covered a whole lot of tricky topics, and although I half expected it to sink any moment, it managed to navigate the treacherous waters with surprising grace.
I liked the characters, the tough decisions they were making and the different lives they were leading. There is still considerable simplification happening, especially as it relates to the villains and their comeuppance, but there was enough complexity in other issues to compensate for that.
However, there is one tiny bit that bugs me: I am 100% certain that I just read this book for the first time. However there were a couple passages towards the end which gave me the weirdest sense of deja vu! I am also 100% certain that I have read them before, and I can't for the life of me figure out how that might have happened. It was bizarre - I knew each next word before I read it, but only for a couple sentences from each of the 2 passages. Weird.

This book is more “chick lit” than romance genre. The term “chick lit” is so sexist to start out with. Unfortunately, very few parts of this book would pass the Bechdel test. Nearly every passage and conversation in this book revolves around 1. a really bad relationship coupled with fat abuse, 2. a mysteriously rocky relationship coupled with fitness obsession, and 3. an even more mysterious escape from a relationship coupled with eating disorder/s. 2.5 stars

Doormats pretending to be women allow men to dictate every aspect of their emotions and lives. They even teach them the secrets to life and happiness while they help each other get fit! Yay! Throw in a poorly researched eating disorder, slap some fake GiRl PoWeR vIBeS and you’ve got yourself a book!
I normally LOVE these types of books, heavens know I need the stress relief and they make me happy. This book just pissed me off.

It has been a long time since I’ve read a book about women finding themselves because of new friendships and bad romances. I loved the character development and the bit of mystery thrown in actually had me gasping, because I didn’t see it coming (normally I’m pretty good at predicting the token mystery). It wasn’t too cliche, which is nice for this type of book. The end tied up everything nice and sweet. It was definitely a nice change from some of the other books I read this month.
I listened to it and again I was disappointed with the narrator. If a narrator can’t do more than a few voices if makes it rather difficult to distinguish which character is talking when the characters aren’t named.
