I think I just had a hard time because I would think the narrative was trying to lead me down one path and then it would lead me down a different one entirely. Still, I liked the country queers vibes and it was overall enjoyable. I honestly think the book would have been better without the romance. It really feels like the B plot, which makes categorizing it as a romance novel a bit unrealistic.
I have to admit I also thought Ray was kind of a jerk and I thought that's what we were supposed to think so I was surprised when they end up together even tho Ray is very shallow and uncommitted.

While the premise is really fun, I felt the chemistry was lacking between the main character and the love interest. Honestly, I kept waiting for someone else to appear as the actual love interest and was kind of disappointed when I realized that was definitely not the case 3/4 into the book.
I can understand why El is into Ray, but not why Ray returns those feelings. We never really see any scenes where El is someone that Ray vibes with on a romantic level. For me, their ultimately getting together felt more like Ray being afraid of losing her best friend than her being actually interested in El. That isn't romantic and is unlikely to be sustainable, from my view.
The book still gets 3 stars, because the side characters are fun and the premise is enjoyable. I also love the promotion of small town queerness throughout, but the romance was particularly lacking to me.

This was fun. I read The Split a few years ago and really liked it but then kind of forgot to keep up with the rest of Laura Kay's books until now. It's a great premise and my favourite parts were the friendship group and their village life. I would have liked to see a bit more character development on El's part because she was a little passive. Also I didn't really know if I was supposed to be rooting for El and Ray or not. However it was definitely a light-hearted, entertaining read and I'll make an effort to read Tell Me Everything soon.
