These poems
they are things that I do
in the dark
reaching for you
whoever you are
and are you ready?

These words
they are stones in the water
running away

These skeletal lines
they are desperate arms for my longing and
love.

I am a stranger
learning to worship the strangers
around me

whoever you are
whoever I may become.
-These Poems

This is such a beautiful, and massive, collection of poem which touches on a variety of themes and ideas: race, racism and love to name a few.

I had only recently heard of this poet. She has so much to say about injustice and political situations. I want to read more of her work.

Perhaps if more upper-middle class & rich white women were taught to love June Jordan as much as they were taught to love Emily Dickinson, more upper-middle class & rich white women would vote democrat.

I absolutely cannot give this a star rating and here's why: I read this anthology completely the wrong way, which is to say cover to cover. Never read a book like this cover to cover, your brain goes numb and only every so often registers an absolute banger of a poem. It just doesn't work. Like, this is a magisterial collection, but never read poetry like a book where you start at the beginning and go to the end. No; poetry should be read in spurts, maybe even just one, something that matches your mood. or maybe a sequence. Or a few by theme, finding the sensual Jordan, the Black and proud Jordan using Black English like a precision instrument, or political and angry Jordan.

Do not, do not just read it straight through. Even slowly - I did this over like 2 months. There's too much. It goes meaningless that way.

Will be reading a lot more of June Jordan’s work. I am not done yet growing this new found love.

A HOSTIA.

Se non lestes aínda a June Jordan -ata o seu nome é aliterado!-, estades tardando. Muller, negra, non hetero, activista...: ten plumas pa dar e tomar. E a súa poesía é un FUCK YEAH continuo.

En serio, lédea, lédea, lédea, lédea...
