Nacht van het kwaad

Ken Follett

Great second instalment...as always Follett does a great job with the historical timelines and draws the reader along with the story and characters. From pre-war Berlin to the Fascist movement in Britain, the Spanish civil war and Pearl Harbour, the evolution of communism in Russia and the early days of the Cold War and a divided Germany, Follett brings these important historical events to life. Looking forward to reading the third chapter!

Too little character development, dialogue seemed wooden -- these didn't feel like the three-dimensional characters of the first book. I loved Billy Williams and his sister Eth, and here they have little to say and the new characters aren't fully drawn. Nonetheless I'm going to go for book 3 and end the trilogy.

More of the same characters from the first book with focus on their kids as they endure WW2. For as many WW2 books as I have read, I was pleased to learn things I didn't know. Since I don't have any kind of foundation in international politics, a lot of that side of things went over my head, but I was able to glean a new nugget or two. Looking forward to finishing the trilogy.

I really liked this book as well as the first. The author has a wonderful way of keeping you hooked as he tells a story and at the same time you learn a lot about the history. I love how he involves 5 different families from 5 different countries and intertwines them without being partial, he gives an honest viewpoint.

A sure sign that I like a book is when I can fly through 940 pages in five days. Winter of the World by Ken Follett is the second book in the Century Trilogy. The same characters from Fall of Giants are here though the main focus is on their children as they all navigate WWII. It's fascinating to have a story told from the perspective of American, Russian, English, Welsh, and German families. While there are definitely some flaws with this book (a few too many coincidences for one), I couldn't help but be enthralled by this story.

I hate when I finish an enjoyable serious......especially when they are nice thick books.

Really good - epic story told from multiple unique perspectives.

Ken Follett does an amazing job with historical fiction.

I don't usually leave comments, but I must say this is one of the worst books I've ever read. Don't know why I kept reading. It's impossible to believe that this small group of people would be at the center of EVERY critical moment of the 1930s and 40s! And, clearly this guy has no clue how women think. The statements he attributes to his female characters about fashion and sex are sometimes quite comical.
