This book beautifully weaves together two stories. The closer you get to the end, the harder the book is to put down. The characters are well-developed and intriguing. A gentle reminder that all families have stories - some more complex than others. There were many times as I read that I gasped out loud with the beautifully written plot twists.

I have loved all her books: bringing present and past together

Some readers complain that Kate Morton's books are too long. That they drag a bit in the middle. That they could be edited down. All of this is true, but I'm glad to linger in the worlds Morton creates. I enjoy the leisurely unfolding of characters and places and motives and secrets. When reading stories that take place over decades and generations, what's the rush?

Like all of Morton's books, this one involves a smart, contemporary woman delving into the past to uncover long-held family secrets, solve a mystery or two, and repair one or two relationships along the way. It's immersive and entertaining and satisfying if you're in the mood to curl up and get lost for a while.
