This was a long book and I was uncertain about reading it because some reviews talked about how it dragged and that there was too much backstory. I even picked it about a year ago and decided I didn't want such a long read. I'm glad I went back to it. I read the ebook version borrowed through Libby.
This is an interesting mystery, mostly set in Australia. It alternates between present time and 1960 when the murders took place. It's a fascinating look at human flaws and how they can influence others lives and perceptions. There is a lot of detail but I enjoyed the thoroughness.
The reveal of the murderer was a surprise to me, not who I expected but it makes sense once you had all the facts.
Overall well done and would recommend as long as you are not looking for a page turning thriller.

The main mystery was pretty obvious from the start, but the writing was lovely and there were a few nice twists here and there to keep it interesting.

I picked this up because Claire Foy narrated it (for 20 hours- why didn’t that give me more pause!) but I had to switch to the kindle copy to breeze through the second half. Slow-paced and overly demanding to read due to the multitude of characters and excessive and unnecessary detail. A different version of me would have enjoyed the writing, but current me found it to be a slog. Kudos for gorgeous cover art (that seems to relate to the story in absolutely no way at all.)
