This was the first book I've read in a hard copy in a very long while - and I quite enjoyed both the story and the experience of reading a hard copy again. This book provided good company on several long drives. This wasn't my favourite of Kate Morton's books but I definitely got more into it than I did The Clockmaker's Daughter (that was a DNF for me). Like other reviewers have said, the main character of Jess didn't really do so much sleuthing as she did reading what other people provided her - not much original investigative work. And as if she waited until two weeks after her arrival in Australia to check up in the attic?? The relationship with her mom, Polly, and Polly's point of view in the story was probably the most interesting aspect of the book for me - I wish that had been explored a bit further and that Polly had had a chance for a greater reckoning. Obvs we knew from the start that Polly was Thea, but the details of the switch came fast and furious at the end. Again, how all of those details came to light was not thanks to any good work by Jess but just everything being revealed by those who were ready to reveal it. The other thing I found lacking here was any closure in the realm of Jess's job -- she came there with an assignment to write and didn't really do any of it. I thought, when her initial article idea fizzled for her, that the uncovering and writing of this story would have become a central aspect of the story, but that plotline literally just disappeared about halfway through.

I really wanted to like this book, but there was just so, SO much pointless information that it took away from the potential of it. The actual underlying story is a good one… but is it worth getting to? I’m still unsure. There is a book inside of a book if that says anything.

Very slow to start. I gave it 3 stars because halfway through it picked up and the twists and turn at the end. I don't think I will be reading any more from this author, not my style.
