Taking a break from my recent Philip Roth obsession (it's hard to go back to his syllabic minutia after reading Portnoy's Complaint) I took a little detour. I devoured this book in 36 hours. Brilliant. It's a memoir, written by a poet, so it has beautiful writing, capturing moments with crystal clarity. The book is about Nick Flynn's relationship with his father, and how they ended up meeting, for the first time, in a homeless shelter. And if that little teaser doesn't interest you, go beat your head in with a few hundred pounds of shit memoirs out there, of which there are many. My one criticism of this book is in the way that it strings the reader along emotionally. It leaves a lot up to the construction of the reader, a lot to be implied. It makes the story a bit difficult to relate to, but I doubt that's the point. It's beautiful. Read it. Then get back to your Philip Roth.

Not bad. At times exciting and fresh at other times indulgent and plodding. But overall a good quick read.

A book this honest could easily be taken as bleak and depressing, but Flynn weaves the story of his relationship with his father with the look towards redemption and hope that make this an amazing memoir.
