Me: Moth is a beautifully somber story told in verse, following Moth as she navigates the aftermath of tragedy and loss. When she meets Sani, a boy with his own struggles, the two take a road trip to find healing through their ancestors.
I’m torn on this one—it’s beautifully written, with cryptic, metaphorical language that reflects the heaviness of Moth’s emotional journey. The themes of identity, healing, and first love were poignant, and I appreciated the unexpected twist at the end that added depth to the story. But at the same time, it felt a bit distant and difficult to fully connect with at times.
This book left me with mixed feelings, but I’m glad I read it for the exploration of self and memory.

For something written in verse and with such lovely words and with such a sad, heavy topic and such a sad, heavy ending, I am disappointed that I felt so entirely disconnected.

I liked the verse. I liked the Hoodoo and Navajo elements. I liked how reality and fantasy were often muddled and left me in my own dreamlike state.

But I just could not figure out why Moth and Sani had fallen so hard for one another and why this infatuation was just all consuming all so quickly. I ultimately felt almost nothing for either one of them, which was damn near tragic.

And sometimes repetition is impactful, but in this, I just felt like I was being beaten over the head long after I was already bloodied and bruised. I started wanting to skim, which shouldn't happen when the writing is this beautiful (but I'd already read some of those beautiful lines a dozen times...did I need to read them again?).

This was just okay for me. And so -
