Oh wow. That was not what I was expecting when my book club raved about this book. It is beautiful and haunting and I want to reread it. I'm so glad I listened to the audiobook.

Beautiful and haunting novel in verse. Themes of grief and healing, storytelling in song and dance, listening to/for the ancestors. Would be great to pair with American Street by Ibi Zoboi or Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor.

I was really liking it but they kinda lost me at the end

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 for this beautiful piece of work. Moth, who lost her family in a car accident, feels alone and withdrawn. Then she meets Sani, a guy who also seems like he is lost. The two embark on a cross-country road trip, Sani battling the demons of his depression and Moth desperately trying to heal him. The writing is gorgeous and haunting, and this is a wonderful choice for mature 8th grade and up.

I wanted to like this book. I love the concepts, however I felt much of the book was just wrong. Travel across the country in a car with no money and even manage to stay in hotels? Then there are the race points in the book. The cultures and religious beliefs involved were important to reach the conclusion of the plot, however it felt too harshly done. Maybe a second writer who was actually Navajo, rather than just an advisor, would have helped. Unfortunately this book did not do the concepts justice for me.
