Not giving this a star rating since it is a middle grade book.
I liked elements of it, and the theming was well-written.
However, I did not like the twist. While Moth being a ghost was lightly telegraphed throughout the book, I felt like the revelation short-cut the resolution to the problems Sani and Moth faced. She didn't end up having to deal with her guilt/grief. He didn't have to heal from his family's abuse.
I liked elements of it, and the theming was well-written.
However, I did not like the twist.
Graphic: Grief
Moderate: Death, Physical abuse, Car accident, Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Genocide, Racism, Slavery, Colonisation
I always love books inverse, especially when I’m listening to them, and they are being particularly well read. The author read this on audible, and you could tell her closeness with the story. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, I’m just going to say that this one is deep! I think my middle schoolers could read it, but I’m not sure that the mature enough to quite understand the depth of the content.
Can’t get into the audio going to try the book
