I really enjoyed the style of these pieces and the intersection of a historical, old-timey brand of waywardness with contemporary searches for identity. Favorite stories: Taylor Johnson’s Lightning Man, Bump, Surrogate, Manywhere.

"As we walked, he told me of the places he'd seen. His manywheres. Never what he'd done, whom he'd met, whom he'd loved. Only where he'd been."

Morgan Thomas enlightens us with this wonderfully unique collection of nine short stories. Each one had quite an interesting plot, writing style, and characters. We travel across time, in different states, focusing on queer stories in the South. Witty and so original. A common theme being 'finding oneself.' They will be someone to follow in the future.

I liked some of the stories more than others. I was confused with the order and the jumping through times. I would’ve preferred to read about just one of the characters or have some way for the stories to connect - i was missing the cohesiveness that brought them all together.

I may have gone in with too high expectations, but these stories didn't really hit like I thought they would. I really enjoyed the characters Thomas created, and there were some stunning standout stories, but some were a bit unfocused and forgettable. However, they definitely have a unique voice and I'd look out for more of their stuff.

love a short story collection that is mostly about historically-oriented obsessives with Gender Trouble. A lot of good ones; "Taylor Johnson's Lightning Man" was probably my favorite.
