Wonderfully angsty!!
Right off the bat, I loved Talia. She found something worth fighting for: Jasper. And NOTHING was going to deter her from giving him her full devotion. He didn't deserve it at first, but she wore him down with her sincere care and affection. I liked him by the end of book one.
Can't really say I liked anybody else in the pack though lol
We'll see if they change my mind in the next book!

The Beta: Part One by Avanne Michaels
I haven’t felt so many gut punches as this book has made me feel. There is a lot to unpack here, but if you like Omegaverse with strong female heroines, pack dynamics, and Why choose with MM aspects, then you’ll love this book. There is also a bit of mystery to figure out going on in the story's background with the rouges.
Talia is a force to be reckoned with. She is not a simpering female who needs any saving. She's actually the one who protects and saves, and sometimes better than an alpha. In the story, she’s been placed in a home with four alphas and one omega, with her mom hoping it turns her beta status into an omega one. Everyone in her family has either presented as alpha or omega, so It's weird that she’s a beta when logic says she should be an omega. Talia could care less if she finds a pack, and she’s used to being alone and looking out for herself.
There are rouges who are taking power where they can. Omegas are turning up missing, and the council can’t be fully trusted. The rouges have targeted Jasper for years, but the deeper they dig into the rouges, the more horrifying their motives seem to be.
Omegas are naturally cherished and loved by their pack, Jasper is no different. But since Talia presented as a beta and not an omega, she feels she’s let her family down and has been a disappointment. I waited for Talia's happiness to shine through, but it never came. She’s so wrapped up in protecting and cherishing Jasper that she doesn’t have time for herself.
“I am so very tired of being alone and not having anyone to share anything with that, at first, I thought it was just my loneliness reaching for him, but that isn’t it. There’s something, some kind of magnetic force that pulls him to me and me to him” –Talia talking about Jasper
Jaspers alphas are very much assholes to Talia. They treat her poorly to get her to want to leave, but she's just trying to survive where she can.
“I think they forget that I’m more than their omega and that I am not some simpering, feeble, weak thing to be protected within an inch of my sanity. That I’m capable of protecting my pack.” –Jasper
Example of Devon’s temper tantrums and attitude toward Talia:
“I know there's something, some kind of connection between you and him, but he is my omega. Mine. You are not my beta. You are not pack. And you need to understand that the second he's at risk because of you then you're gone. The second he's done with you, you're gone” – Devon to Talia
I could NOT put this book down. This whole series captured my attention for days, and It’s quickly become one of my favorite books. There are very intense trigger warnings in the story, SA is one of them, and it’s graphic. There’s also a fair amount of alpha males being jerks.
