OH MY HEAVENS WHAT A WONDERFUL AMAZING PRECIOUS BOOK THIS IS. I AM IN LOVE. YES I NEED TO WRITE THIS IN ALL CAPS CAUSE IT IS SO DAMN GOOD. ITS FUNNY, THRILLING, EXCITING, MAGICAL, REALISTIC AND FULL OF AMAZING CHARACTERS. THE WORLD SCARLETT THOMAS HAS CREATED IS AMAZING AND MAGICAL. I love this book to bits and pieces and I just need the rest of the series right now. ITS SO ORIGINAL AND MAGICAL AND WONDERFUL.

Dit boek wordt in de markt gezet als ‘voor fans van Harry Potter’. Ik was eerst een beetje sceptisch, maar al snel sloeg het om naar enthousiasme: dit boek heeft echt de potentie om in de buurt te komen! Want:
- Leuke karakters die door kunnen groeien.
- Het lijkt ergens op Harry Potter, maar het is ook echt anders (iets met een wereldbeving die bijna alle techniek heeft opgeheven, verschillende gaven en ook nog magische munten die het boek bijna iets van en computerspel geven met levels etc).
Ik begon het boek al bijna aan mensen aan te raden, alleen… toen ging het mis. De gestadige opbouw sloeg ineens om. Hoofdpersoon Fee belandde plotseling in een vaag subplot dat zich afspeelde in het boek Drakendal. Qua sfeer vond ik dat verhaal ineens heel anders, ook niet zo origineel en helemaal niet bij Fee passen. Andere hoofdpersonen Max en Wolf kwamen in een volgend subplot terecht, dat ook niet echt soepel liep en ondertussen kwamen er nog twee nieuwe karakters bij die nergens goed werden geïntroduceerd: Lexie en Jade. Ik raakte helemaal uit het verhaal en las zelfs een tijdje met tegenzin.
Op het einde kwam het weer redelijk goed toen alle karakters weer samenkwamen. Wel was het allemaal een beetje gehaast en er werd heel veel informatie tegelijk onthuld. Ik weet niet.. ik vind dit een boek met veel potentie, maar volgens mij had er nog een edit-ronde overheen gemoeten. Het is net uit balans of zo. Toch blijft het wel een serie met potentie wat mij betreft. Misschien leidt dit wat haperende eerste deel uiteindelijk wel tot een fantastische serie. Ik ga het tweede boek nog wel een kans geven daarom!

There weren't as many character interactions as I would have liked. And this is most likely due to the world building. So since that's out of the way, I look forward to seeing the friendships grow in the next books. I would love to see the characters grow up a little more with each book if this series goes long enough.

September 2021: I reread this before I wanted to read book 2 and 3, and I think I got a bit stricter in my ratings. I really did enjoy it, but it was definitely not a 5-star read for me, as I previously rated it. I am still very excited for the other books!
I was so pleasantly surprised when I found this at the bookstore. The cover drew me in, and after reading the blurb, I was sold. It took me a while to get used to the writing though, but the story was so wonderful, so well-thought and enchanting, I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next installment!
