I will not let my fear silence the truth.

I really loved how this book teemed with so much life. The vivid descriptions of the world, the story, what the story represents—all of this is what gives this book a high rating for me. I loved the concept and it was nice to see that this contained none of the dangers of a single story (Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie).

The characters of the story gave me life. They felt real—even the moments that I didn’t like.
There were moments in the novel where the characters were beginning to annoy me: Zelie and Inan had their moments where I just wanted them to shut up, but I did love them. All of the characters. All the ones struggle and fighting and trying to just live.

It’s a story about three people, who have many different things to learn about the world and themselves, trying to bring magic back. Stories about coming together for a different future, raising questions about if that is even possible, what the risks and potential consequences could look like.

I loved it and honestly I’m ready for the next installment.

It was an average cliche ya fantasy with some interesting magic systems and locations. The romance felt very quick for both zelie/inan and amari/tzain lol

I could have done without so much teenage love story, but this book was fantastic otherwise. It is a wonderfully told story of magic, but also a unique reimagining of the oppression that fills the world. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and everyone.

The characters are really interesting but the plot isn’t grabbing me.
