Took awhile to get into, but the world setup is interesting and the romance is well developed. Good if you want a gothic slow burn.

It was fine. The beginning was the best part, along with the overall aesthetic of the entire novel with the dark clothes, the gothic atmosphere, the simple magic system, and the mist clinging to the city.

Once it got past 55%, I started getting annoyed with the repetition of character descriptions and certain phrases. The main romance was not for me. Elspeth also started to get on my nerves the more the novel went on.

I'll still read the second book, but I'm not in a rush to do so.

I loved the writing. The descriptions were incredible and it reminded me of a folklore fantasy novel with intricate details and world building. As a reader you had to be focused but it was so worth it. Incredible read. This book feels like a dark bitter cozy hot chocolate- it’s rich, dark, makes you think, but is also comforting and feels like it was told around a campfire for centuries.

Morally grey tall, dark and handsome love interest, witty side character, and a 500 year old sassy monster living in the main character’s head - what more could you ask for?

If you’re going to read this, and I cannot stress this enough, please go into it as blind as possible/with no expectations! Do not listen to booktok when they say it is a romance book. It is not. It does, however, have a great romance *subplot*.
