Weird books for weird girls!!! I don’t think I’ve ever read anything with so much poop. And spit. There was so much symbology that I flashed back to high school English class a few times. Some truly beautiful lines. Some truly disgusting imagery. I don’t even know. I loved (?) it, but if it was made into a movie I would absolutely not watch it.

4 stars for allowing girls to be weird and gross and disturbing in the way we often let boys get away with unscathed in literature. 4 stars for a beautiful, metaphorical and imaginative blending of magical realism and horror. I loved how this book and author shamelessly put little girls in the center of feces and blood and rot without a hint of apology — this, combined with with the reoccurring discussions of woman and girlhood (and what each means, both to one’s self and greater society), cemented the pages in feminist fiction. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and it may take another read for me to completely grasp it, but it was refreshing and original and lovely.
