REVIEW POST - Book 69 of 2024
The Donor by Clare Mackintosh
The Donor by Clare Mackintosh is a novella that I found to be an okay read, but not particularly remarkable. As a short, contained story, it worked well enough. Mackintosh's writing is clean, and she sets the scene efficiently. However, much of the narrative felt predictable, following familiar thriller tropes that didn't bring anything especially new to the table.
That said, the last chapter was a real highlight for me, offering a twist or resolution that gave the story a bit of a satisfying punch at the end. It’s clear Mackintosh knows how to pull the reader in during the final moments, and it’s this element that makes me want to explore more of her work.
In terms of pacing, it moved quickly enough to keep my interest, but I wouldn’t say I was on the edge of my seat. I didn’t mind the read, but it didn’t blow me away either. It felt like a solid, middle-of-the-road thriller that didn't linger too much in my mind afterward. Still, as a quick read, it did its job, and I'll be curious to see how Mackintosh handles longer, more intricate stories.

This was such a short read but it sucked me right in! It made me angry and frustrated in all the right parts, which is when I know I’m really invested in a thriller.
I thought it was initially going to be gross and gaslighty against the female lead, but trust me and stick with it as it alllllllll makes sense in the end.
Def keen to check out more Clare Mackintosh now, if this is what she can do with just over 100 pages!
