It's hard to describe this book in a way that makes sense but I'd say weirdly cozy gothic horror would just about cover it. The basic premise is this: what if a deeply anxious young woman found herself mourning the death of her only parent and suddenly in the middle of a gothic horror story? Marin is a compelling point of view character because of her deep empathy for the creepy young girls she's in charge of and later, their older sister. There is a lot of body horror with rotting and decaying corpses but otherwise, this book is oddly hopeful and cozy, despite being set amongst so much grief and death.

Not as disturbing as I expected and the romance is rushed but a fun read

romance was too fast paced but that honestly didn’t affect my enjoyment cause these vibes were impeccable 
the big reveal made me audibly gasp
does the dog die?
nope!! Thisbe recovers from her injuries. however, there is a zombie dog who gets killed, and there’s lots and lots of zombie animals in this story that die
