This book had so much going for it. I think that the ideas are there but the execution and writing just needs to develop more. The dialogue felt very stunted at times and because of this I didn’t feel like I connected with the characters. I loved the darker aspects and think those were some of the best moments. I also liked the exploration of grief and anxiety. I really wanted to like this one and felt like it had so many good qualities but something about the writing was just a smidge off for me. I don’t want to rate this lower because I think this author has a lot of potential and there were a lot of good aspects in this book that just needed some more time to come together.

If you are looking for a moody, Gothic sapphic horror that really draws you into the watery dark atmosphere and isolation of an old house in Maine, then this is the book for you!
I felt like this book really did a good job of creating an eerie atmosphere, with dark shadows, dead birds, little girls burying their dolls and having funerals for them, and waterlogged decay. As this is a YA horror, it wasn’t too gory but I will definitely be having some dreams about bones and creepy greenhouses!

Now THIS is my kind of horror book. Not too scary, but definitely creepy. I haven't watched Bly Manor, but after this, I think I just might. The story follows Marin, who has a recent event that haunts her, and she gets a job in Maine in quite the creepy house! But it belongs to Marin's favorite author, so she goes ahead with the job. Of course, it's hard when the children are downright eerie and seem not to like her. Things get worse and worse as Alice ends up not being as good of a person as you'd think. There's a lot of creepiness, of course, with the creepy house portion, but also with a lot of inclusion of dead animals. This could be a trigger warning for some people. If you like a book with dark secrets unraveling and classic haunted house feelings, this is a book you should read.
