If you are looking for a eerie young adult book to enjoy this summer look no further!

My favorite thing about this book was unwravelling the mystery behind the creepy encounters at Lovelace manor! It was perfectly spooky for those who enjoy a creepy atmosphere, but isn’t overly scary. I also enjoyed the anxiety rep and the queer romance which we always love.

I think the relationships could have been further explored, but overall this was an enjoyable read.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an ebook in exchange for my review.

Wish it was more show instead of tell. The third part was pretty good. Every time I read a part of the book that captured my attention it seemed to vanish almost as quickly.

I loved Thea and Wren.

There definitely moments of tension and suspense and love and excitement it just got lost because of the direct writing style.

I feel like this would be a really good tv show but it was kinda mehhh to read. The romance was a bit insta lovey we don't really see them actually get to know each other imo. Not in a deep enough way to justify love. I felt like their love was happening in all the moments not being written about.

I didn't really enjoy the portrayal of anxiety magically going away just because you like/are interested in someone either but maybe that's the authors experience and it just didn't resonate with me.

Not bad just very meh for the majority of it.

Review:

This one gets a 4-star review from me... I don't typically read anything related to Horror, but I enjoyed this one. The cover first caught my eye- I didn't realize that it was Horror...but perhaps I should have given the title 😅. Oh well, I still enjoyed it. Would I watch it as a movie? No. Probably not- I definitely tend to stay away from Horror movies. I think that it helped that there was romance, and the horror was paranormal/gothic that I can work with. HOWEVER... this took some turns I was not expecting.

Slight summary:

Meet Marin, who just lost her mother. She becomes a nanny for the recently widowed Alice. Alice has three children: Thea, Wren, and Evie. Evie is away at school, so really, Marin just needs to take care of Thea and Wren. The girls aren't quite like the other children. Thea likes to bury her dolls, Wren tries to drive Marin away, and when Evie unexpectedly returns home from school, Marin discovers how ethereal and graceful Evie is.

This was a creepy, haunting gothic horror story. The gory descriptions of animal deaths made me squirmy. The sapphic romance was...fine? I don't think the writing was lyrical or romantic to make me deeply invested in their love story, but it was nice to see them care for each other.
I had no idea necromancy was involved in the story!
Grief and death were major themes here, and I think it was handled well. Everyone had their own ways to handle their grief.

DID NOT FINISH: 12%

Already too way too many dead and dying animals...and I've barely read anything so I'm sure it's gonna get worse.
