[4/5 ★★★★☆] “I want to put down roots here; beside you, across a pond from you, somewhere new with you, I don’t care. You’ve made me want to do that, to plant myself somewhere and flourish.” description

Tarah DeWitt lo volvió a hacer, no sé qué tienen sus libros pero de repente parpadeo y ya estoy a nada de acabarlos, amamos.

Rootbound is a complete juxtaposition; it’s comfy and cosy, while also devastatingly deep and reflective. As a fatherless daughter, it’s a rollercoaster of emotions and idealism and has given me a lot of food for thought, which I should probably forget to save myself any further heartache.

I understand Tait, not just in her difficulty to maintain friendships in her heartache or her willingness to be fine even after so much loss and betrayal, but in her love of the simple, of light and beauty and animals and community. She feels outside of it, but she still appreciates it for everything that it is worth, and I understand that completely and wholly.

There are passages in this book that had me screaming. There are passages that had me trapped in self-reflection. I felt every emotion and searched so many parts of my own heart while reading it that I feel hungover. I don’t want to let these characters go because I think they could teach me a lot about my own family and my own life, but I also think I don’t want to leave them because I am sure that my own homecoming would not be the positive, welcoming and loving affair that Tait’s would. There are no secrets hidden with my estranged family, I am sure. There are no justifiable reasons to have stayed away. For Tait, however, she gets to learn that she has been loved her whole life. She has been wanted and cared for, even when she didn’t want it. There is such beauty in this story and such hope.

Of course, Tait and Henry’s relationship is lovely. It’s sexy and sweet, open and honest. They are kindred in many ways, so it makes sense that they’re together. More than anything about this book, I love the relationships of everybody else. I love Grady’s immediate love for his sister. I love LeighAnn and James’ excitement over seeing their niece. I love Charlie’s humility and willingness to accept his shortcomings. I love the games night and breakfasts and Emma always knowing everything. This is family that many could only dream of. I don’t know if this is real anywhere in life, but I’m more than happy to read about it and pretend that it could be one day.

The ending gave me full body chills.

Other than the stereotypical annoyances, a fun read.
