As someone who's ancestors came to the Midwest from Scandinavia (Norway and Sweden) in the 1850s to farm I always felt a strong tie to Kirsten and when American Girl announced that they were bringing back Kristen (and all of the other original six) for the 35th anniversary I was over the moon. I am long past my playing with dolls stage but that doesn't stop me from collecting and displaying them and now Kristian can be apart of that :).

What came with the Kristen doll was this book, when I got American Girl dolls as a kid and went to the American Girl store the books never really interested me. All I really wanted was the doll and accessories. As I have grown up through I wish I had payed more attention to the books and wish I had even read some. For a book targeted at girls under the age of 10 this book does deal with strong subjects something that surprised me. I didn't expect to read about (in an American Girl book) the topic of death from illness nor did I expect to actually want to read her other books in her collection.

Meet Kirsten begins when Kirsten and her family travel from Sweden to America by ship. A lot of things happen to her along the way, and she must stay brave for her family.

This book was not as good as some of the other American girl series, but I liked it. I was saddened by some things that happened in it, but I could never really connect with Kirsten.

Other than that I did like this one, and I look forward to reading more about her in other books.

I read this book for two reasons: nostalgia and for my Reading Challenge. I wasn't sure if I ever finished this book when I was collecting American Girl dolls so I read it now and it was a pretty decent book. I mean, yes, the books I actually read are better but for being less than 60 pages, it had a pretty good storyline. I plan to finish this series and then continue with the books I normally read afterwards. I would recommend this book to elementary school children even if it is a little sad since her friend Marta died. But it goes with how it was back then. Anyone could die so it was actually a good thing that they had that happen. Yeah, it's terrible that it did but a lot of people died from cholera back then. Overall, this book got 4 stars and it was a pretty good read.

Went along with the doll I had.

I was recently house-sitting for a family and they gave me a tour of the house beforehand. I am always on the lookout for personal libraries, whether it's on television or I am visiting someone's residence. I noticed the daughter had a few Samantha American Girl books on her shelf and I skimmed through the first book while they were on vacation. Fast forward a month later when I'm at the library and I just want some easy books in the children section. I look up the various American Girl authors and pick the available books for the first girl I see, Kirsten.

I loved reading these books in third grade and they made me feel just as happy more than a decade later. These books are so simple and sweet, but they provided historical information and important themes in an easy to read format. Kirsten's story takes place in the 1860's as she immigrates from Sweden to Minnesota to start a new life with her relatives. It was short story, but it managed to provide loss and important family values in less than 100 pages. It was a delightful reading experience and I'm eager to read the next two books in the series that I checked out. I also hope to read as many of the other American Girl books in the near future.

As they say in Sweden:
Tack, Kristen!

One of my favorites from when I was little. I love that these books are able to cover so much while still being accessible to kids.
