So it is a good book. But if you know the story of Oedipus the foreshadowing is downright cruel, it made me want to scream. I really enjoyed Ismene's story and because I didn't really know much about the original stories there were definitely some plot twists that I didn't expect.

you hear about greek myths and all the horrible things that happened and the shock value is so far removed at this point that we just brush them off but natalie haynes always manages to bring the stories so incredibly to life that the horror is absorbed so much more

In which I have definitely heard the Jocasta/Oedipus story at least twice and still COMPLETELY FORGOT ALL THE DETAILS AND WAS SHOCKED BY VARIOUS TWISTS

*Well, not THE twist

Not relevant to the book itself but when have I let that get in the way of a good review... 10/10 for fans of Ye Olde Classics etc etc.

Come for NH’s lady-led take on the Oedipus story, stay for her to “play fast and loose” (her words) with it in the absolute best way.
