Wanna know how social media springs social movements into action. Open this book it’s a game changer and applicable to what’s happening right now

Another non-fiction challenge for me. This circled back and forth a bit, the points were supported. I look forward to more about social media and politics.

A useful, sweeping examination of social media and protest movements. Tufekci and this book have been on my radar since early 2018, so it was great to finally plunge fully into this world. Tufekci’s personal anecdotes ground each chapter well, and I never got too bogged down in jargon. It did make me realize, though, how quickly social media analysis becomes dated. The bans faced by the outgoing POTUS already complicate (or even challenge) at least a handful of the book’s conclusions.

My initial impression of this book, especially the first third or so, was that it was a good overview and intro to the landscape but that I wished it had a little bit more depth to its analysis. The further along I got, though, and the more I thought about it, the more I’m convinced that this is essential reading for anyone who works with and appreciates the power of information, be they activists, technologists, or journalists. Tufekci is characteristically sharp while remaining totally accessible, and this book opens a Pandora’s box of thorny questions whose answers I am both dreading and eagerly looking forward to discovering, along with the rest of the world.
