I really enjoyed this book. Slow start but it kept me hooked and theorizing. Good ending!

I'm thrilled I read "The Maidens" before this one because, wow, this novel is utterly captivating. I think if I had read The Silent Patient first, I would've been so disappointed in The Maidens. From its gripping storyline and fast-paced plot to its unreliable narrator, it's filled with unexpected surprises and curveballs that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters are wonderfully complex, adding layers of depth to an already intriguing tale. It's a stimulating and insightful read, delivering both emotion and thrills in equal measure - a must-read for any avid bookworm craving an exhilarating rollercoaster ride!

The story revolves around Alicia, a renowned painter who falls silent following her husband's mysterious murder and ends up in a psychiatric hospital. The narrator, psychotherapist Theo, takes us through a rollercoaster of childhood trauma, buried emotions, and their profound impact on shaping a person's character. The exploration of human psychology and childhood trauma shook me to the core; one of the novel's greatest strengths lies in its profound examination of the human psyche.

The enigmatic protagonist, Alicia Berenson, drew me into her world with her shocking act of violence and subsequent silence. The author masterfully unravels Alicia's past and the events leading to her silence, weaving a captivating web of intrigue that kept me hooked until the very end. The alternating perspectives between Alicia's revealing diary entries and Theo's determined pursuit of the truth add layers of tension and psychological depth to the narrative.

While it starts off a bit slow, the pace picks up rapidly, leading to an unimaginable and utterly amazing final twist. The impeccable pacing keeps the plot moving forward, leaving readers on the edge of their seats with each chapter. The haunting and atmospheric setting created by the author enhances the overall sense of unease, making for an immersive and unforgettable reading experience.
