The movie adaptation is actually pretty good, but there are additional pleasures in Irving's prose. Irving is a favorite author, and I've enjoyed everything I've ever read by him.

“A book feels true when it feels true.” I imagine we all felt like Jillsy Sloper did reading this story: Horrified, disturbed, even depressed—but nonetheless reading it for the truth of it all. Many times, just when I thought I’d honed in on its true message, another infuriatingly profound layer reveals itself. This is a timeless novel about sexual hatred just as much as it is about fear and anxiety, just as much as it is about writing and creativity…and the lethal consequences of each. By the time I finished, The World According to Garp had taken its place as one of the most important books I’ll likely ever read. I’ll keep a copy of this book in my own “infirmary library” in case, like Jillsy Sloper, I need to LEND it to someone (“there might be someone I know who needs to be reminded what men in this world is like.”).

Don't like how feminist is equated to man-hating in this book, but I guess it's "historical". Otherwise a good story :)

I love John Irving!

The world without garp is much more intriguing than when he's a player in it (literally, I only liked the Garp parts)
