Great book, great author, I'm a fan !

"Una novela sólo es un almacén de todas las cosas importantes que un novelista no es capaz de emplear en su vida"
Este es el libro que determina si te gusta o no John Irving. Porque lo tiene todo. Todo su universo está en esta novela.
Ya la había leído hace mil años y no me acordaba de muchas cosas. Me ha fascinado, claro.

Odd feeling about this one. This book felt like to took forever to finish, but only because it is so, SO dense. The character of T.S. Garp is so intricately constructed that at times, you almost forget this is a fictional person. I can see why this book is considered great - the themes, motifs, allusions, symbolism - it's all there. I'd love to hear a Helen Holm-esque English professor's take on it. The stories-within-stories and all that they represent could fill their own book. But just because it was very artfully done doesn't mean I had to love it.

I'm glad I got through it because it's beautifully crafted, and I did get attached to several of the characters, but I'm really just glad I'm done!

i think i read this in junior high; it probably deserves a re-read
medium-paced

This is my second Irving book and it’s a mother/son story that’s definitely not your average one, that’s for sure. We follow the story of T. S. Garp and his mother Jenny Fields who have a very constrained relationship as he tries to follow his own dreams while she slowly becomes a feminist icon thanks to her writing. “Garp” at times is a very surreal and harsh story about two people, both with different views and events in their lives. It isn’t as heartwarming as I thought it would be, but it really is a fascinating and unique novel about a son and mother. A- (91%/Excellent)

I appreciate that this book was very well-written, but I never really became invested in the characters. I tend to have trouble with dark comedy, so I think it was hard for me to find the quirkiness funny. And, it felt like it was written for writers.

John Irving is a master at beginning a novel with a character’s coming of age and then taking it from there. He gets the voice of adolescence right because his young characters are always unique and a bit quirky allowing him some license to create interesting young people to play against his adults. I had never read The World According to Garp and I am so glad I got to remedy that situation. The book has the mix of characters and situations that I love reading about described in Irving’s impeccable writing. Even the subjects I don’t enjoy as much are putty in his hands. I always enjoy Irving’s ventures into controversial characters and subjects even when he delves into the darker sides of life. The World According to Garp doesn’t quite stand among my favorites, A Prayer for Owen Meany, The Cider House Rules and A Son of the Circus, but it was a great read just the same.

One of the few fiction books I own. It is a treasure.
