4.03 AVERAGE

i've been mulling over my thoughts on this book for almost a day now and i still have no idea what to make of either it or my feelings towards it. i read the last 200 pages in a desperate, disbelieving, weepy rush because i just HAD TO KNOW how it all ended, and even though everything was tied up perfectly and neatly i still... just wasn't all that satisfied. though maybe i'm mixing up satisfaction and happiness. i don't know. maybe i should stick to not-so-harrowing books. avoid embarrassing situations like that time today when i was out in public and thought about walt garp and started welling up and people were present who saw me welling up and it was a mess. i'm a mess after reading this book. three stars verging on four because any book that makes me think this much about it after the fact must be pretty good, right? but who am i to say

I cannot shake this book. The characters are uniquely warped and yet approachable. Some of the scenes are haunting, and you want to stop reading to give yourself a break. Even after the last page, you know you may never really leave this book. It's gruesome and beautiful. It is simply John Irving.

Been meaning to read this for a while. Was looking for an oddball story, and something weird, and this delivered. Lots of layers of women’s rights, lust, gender roles, living your life, etc.
odd and I kinda liked it.

like a 4.5 but rounding up bc they really got me in the end
challenging dark fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix

This book was weird and sometimes gross, but I found the author’s writing style to be very easy to read and I was curious where this book was going. Like the cleaning lady, I think I only read the book because it was so crazy and unpredictable.
I also liked that the format was unusual and included excerpts from the main character who was a writer.
