This one is a quick read, but a little disturbing! I enjoyed that it was set in Paris since my daughter lives there right now. I found myself looking up places mentioned to see how close they are to where she lives.
The author did a great job of taking a story and turning it into something that really made you think. She is a journalist and this story is based on a real event that happened. I think one of the big themes was that everyone is a little disturbed and if we're not careful and don't follow our gut, we'll all end up dead! Literally. It's all wrapped up in people's inability to deal with problems in their life rather than run away from them. The nanny, whose life is messed up, presents the image of being perfect. However, it isn't long before her problems start to affect her perfect work.

কাহিনীসংক্ষেপঃ
মিরিয়াম এবং তার স্বামী পল উভয়েই কর্মজীবী ব্যস্ত মানুষ। দু'টো ছোট বাচ্চা দেখাশোনা করার সময় তাদের কারোই নেই। সেকারণে তারা একজন ন্যানি খুঁজতে শুরু করে, যে তাদের অফিসের সময়টায় এসে বাচ্চাদের খেয়াল রাখবে। বেশ কয়েকজনের ইন্টারভিউ নেবার পর লুইস নামের মধ্যবয়স্কা মহিলাটিকে তাদের এক নজরেই ভালো লেগে যায়। বাচ্চারাও তার প্রতি আকৃষ্ট হয়ে পড়ে মুহূর্তে।
লুইস ধীরে ধীরে হয়ে উঠে তাদের পরিবারের একজন। সে শুধু বাচ্চাদের দেখাশোনা করে না, ঘরদোর মুছে পরিষ্কার করে সব সাজিয়ে-গুছিয়ে রাখে, রান্না-বান্না করে, মিরিয়াম-পলের বন্ধু-বান্ধবের জন্য পার্টি এরেঞ্জ করে, বাচ্চাদের জন্মদিনের পরিকল্পনা করে। সবকিছুতেই সে অতিরিক্ত নিখুঁত। কিন্তু তার আচরণ অস্বাভাবিক ধরণের, বাচ্চা দু'টোকে নিয়ে সে অত্যধিক আচ্ছন্ন, এমনকি পল-মিরিয়ামের জীবনযাত্রা নিয়েও সে প্রায় নেশাগ্রস্ত। তাদেরকে ছেড়ে সে এক সেকেন্ডের জন্যও দূরে যেতে চায় না। গৃহকর্তা-কর্ত্রী অফিস থেকে বাড়ি ফিরে আসবার পরও তার নিজের এপার্টমেন্টে যেতে ইচ্ছা করে না। গভীর থেকে গভীরভাবে সে জড়িয়ে যেতে থাকে তাদের জীবনে, তাদের সব সাংসারিক আলাপ কান পেতে শোনে। অশুভ এক সত্ত্বার মত সে গেড়ে বসতে থাকে সেখানে।
পাঠ-প্রতিক্রিয়াঃ
বইয়ের শুরুতেই বিস্তারিতভাবে বর্ণিত হয়েছে পল-মিরিয়ামের বাচ্চাদের মৃতদেহের দৃশ্য। অতএব পুরো কাহিনী আবর্তিত হয়েছে মূলত খুনের ব্যাপারটা কেন হলো, কিভাবে হলো তার উত্তর খোঁজার মাধ্যমে।
ছোট ছোট বাক্যে অনুবাদ করায় পুরো লেখাটা পড়তে আরামদায়ক লেগেছে, জানি না অরিজিনালটাই এমন ছিল না কি স্যাম টেইলর নিজ দায়িত্বে জিনিসটা লক্ষ্য রেখেছেন। ছোট্ট বইটি একবসায় পড়ে উঠার মতো।
দারুণ লেগেছে শ্রেণিবিভাগের ব্যাপারটা যেভাবে ফুটে উঠেছে সেটা - বাচ্চাদের দেখাশোনার বাইরে লুইসের একটা নিজস্ব জীবন যে থাকতে পারে সেটা যেন পল-মিরিয়ামের কোনোদিন মনেই হয় নি। দিনের পর দিন শুধু ন্যানির বেতনভুক্ত মহিলা তাদের ঘরের কাজের লোকের সব দায়িত্ব পালন করছিল অথচ তারা কখনো জানবার আগ্রহ দেখায় নি সে কোথায় থাকে, তার কোনো বন্ধুবান্ধব আছে কি না, উইক-এন্ডের দু'টো দিন সে কি করে।
থার্ড-পারসন পারস্পেক্টিভ থেকে বলা গল্পগুলো একারণে সুন্দর হয় - উভয়দিকের দোষ এবং খুঁতগুলো ফুটে উঠে। যদিও সমাপ্তিটা আরেকটু পরিষ্কার করলে ভালো লাগতো আরো।

Very solid. The author knows what to reveal and what to leave unexplained. I enjoyed the read.
Hmmmm. Not sure how this book got so many high ratings. Sensationalistic and uncaptivating at the same time. I basically disliked every single character. DNF gave up at 31%.

I really liked it. My emotions towards Louise are very conflicting. Obviously, she's done a horrible thing which no one can come back from, but there are moments in the book where you feel kind of sorry for her.
I liked how the climax of the book happens at the beginning, I think it made the build up towards the end all the more creepy and suspenseful, you know it's coming, you're just waiting for it

I kept waiting for this to get better, or for a plot twist- neither happened.
I realize this was supposed to work as social commentary, but ultimately I didn't like or really care about any of the characters. One unpleasant character after another, and none of the suspense or tension one might expect, given the book's chosen opening.
