I’ve been stumped on how to write this review because I can’t stop thinking about it; weeks after I’ve finished. I wondered how much was style versus lost in translation, but I liked the plain style with little emotion. I also think she perfectly pulled off giving no reason for the murders, just telling what led up to them. I liked that she didn’t try to justify the murder. She expertly used third person to tell multiple stories, while giving us some insight into characters’ thoughts without actually giving us much of an internal monologue. She also nailed the tone of vague discomfort & slow burn tension.

Hacía mucho tiempo que escuchaba hablar de esta novela de ficción de Slimani, con la que fue galardonada con el premio Goncourt. No esperaba encontrar entre sus páginas un texto tan cautivante aunque sí sabía que me gustaría y que no me dejaría indiferente.
«Canción dulce» nos cuenta la historia de Myriam y Paul, un matrimonio con dos niños que precisa de una niñera tras la vuelta a la vida laboral de la madre de los pequeños. Es después de buscar a la persona ideal para el puesto que contratan a Louise, una mujer que se muestra de lo más amable y cariñosa con los niños y que confían que será la mejor candidata para el puesto solicitado.
Esta historia tiene uno de los mejores comienzos que he podido leer, es sumamente contundente y aplastante. A partir de ese momento, la trama se torna adictiva, queriendo descubrir como se ha llegado a la situación narrada al principio. Me ha maravillado la narración, la profundidad en los análisis de los personajes y la evolución y deterioro de las relaciones.
Tengo que destacar algo aparte del maravilloso ritmo trepidante de lectura que nos ofrece este libro, y es el exquisito personaje de Louise. A lo largo de las páginas la conocemos más en profundidad dándonos cuenta a través de pequeños detalles de la personalidad que oculta tras su delicada apariencia. Uno de esos personajes que te dejan sin palabras, que te dejan sumergirte en sus pensamientos y sus oscuros anhelos ocultos.
En general como podéis apreciar por mi reseña, he disfrutado indiscutiblemente de este escrito, aunque debo admitir que esperaba un final más sorprendente. Sin duda creo que al no tener el factor sorpresa (ya que sabemos el desenlace de la historia desde el primer capítulo) pierde un poco de tensión. Obviamente seguiré leyendo a esta autora que me ha dejado con el corazón compungido.

Okay, I just finished The Perfect Nanny last night and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Does that make it a good book? I’m not sure. To begin with, I almost didn’t read it. I picked it up and began to read it and almost immediately, I was put off. We read right away that the baby is dead.. what a depressing beginning.. and I had a sickening feeling inside so I put it down for a few hours. I knew this was how the book started but I had no idea how it would make me feel once I began to read. In the end, I did go ahead and continue reading but it was most definitely a slow start.
Once I got into the story, it was a fast read. The book isn’t long. The more I got to the know the characters, the sweet children included, the more I dreaded the ending even knowing what it would be. The nanny’s reason for what she did was a mystery and that is mostly what kept me going. I wanted to figure her out, discover what her motive was. How unfortunate that I will never know what caused her to commit murder. I can guess and make assumptions but I won’t know. We are never told and that for me was a very unsatisfying ending.
The writing WAS actually pretty good though and I may have enjoyed the book more if it hadn’t been so depressing and had given the readers an actual informative conclusion. Its a good thing the story wasn’t longer or I likely would not have finished it.
