I'm still not quite sure what to make of this book.  On the one hand, I was totally bought in through the first half where the mix magical realism along with the dark, straight-forward story of a decent into violence was well done and some of the social commentary around how our system pushes people towards these dark places outside of society was good.  However, the reflections of our current politics around racism were where it lost me.  I don't mean to spoil anything but it seems very strange that we are expected to side killers for hire working on behalf of drug cartels when they are offended by people accurately discriminating them against as such.  My hope is the author understood this but it did feel a little bit too much like a middle class liberals worldview projected onto a violent criminal underworld.
