Whew, this book was…..intense. Dark. So good. Many parts were hard to read but it definitely held my attention the whole time.

While this was a generally enjoyable read, it felt messy in how it handled a lot of its themes, either being too ham fisted in driving home a point or abandoning certain discussions altogether until they were suddenly relevant. This was also a bit of a frustrating read in that the translation was spotty and without continuous flipping between the book and a translator there was a lot of context lost unless you put in the effort. This also felt like it added to some of the mythologization of cartels without further commentary on what that narrative does socially. Lots of potential, interesting and devastating premise, and some imagery that will stick with me for a long time.
