For many years, my dad and I shared George's wonderful mysteries. He would read the book and I would listen to the audio. We both liked the characters - I think my dad liked Lynley best and I liked Havers, the woman who worked with Inspector Lynley. It was good to share these stories with my father.

This is the last Elizabeth George novel that my dad read. I gave it to him for Christmas the year it came out. When my dad died, my mom returned the book to me. Because of all the memories, I never read it. I just couldn't do it and I think I put my copy in my library's collection several years ago.

After all these years, I decided I should try again. I started with the audiobook, but I felt like it was dragging, so I got the book out of the library. It was good to get back to some of the characters that I had visited with for so many years.

However, Havers isn't in this book at all and Lynley is a minor character. So from that point of view, the novel was disappointing. George has always told a good tale and so I was intrigued by the place and the story. This part of the series is well worth reading.

If you like mysteries and enjoy series, the Lynley series is well worth reading. I have always found the characters likable, but not perfect, fascinating but realistic. I recommend the series to anyone who has not tried it. I would start with an earlier volume so you can meet all of the characters, not just these two.

My first (and last) Elizabeth George book. Well crafted whodunnit but overly wordy and obviously written by someone not really familiar with British culture, let alone the Channel Islands.

I enjoyed this instalment of the Det Lynley series. It was nice to get more of an insight into Simon and Deborah St James.
