Why so obsessed with Defoe?
A fun and exciting Star Trek adventure, but my least favorite of the Discovery novels so far. I was really hoping to get more insight and character development on Una, but a significant amount of this novel is devoted to Lieutenant Connolly. Miller does a great job at capturing the essence of Anson Mount as Captain Pike as well as setting up a backstory for why we meet Spock as we do in season 2 of Discovery. If you're a serious and devoted Discovery fan, which of course you should be, this book is well worth your time but unless we get a full Pike Enterprise series it's definitely not essential reading.

I was ready to give this book 4 or 4.5 stars until the last 50 pages. I enjoyed the short chapter format and thought that the writing was easy to follow and painted a great picture. The writing (not necessarily the plot) towards the end felt lazy and unpolished.
I did appreciate the gap left by the Discovery television show that the storyline filled. Unlike other Trek novels, The Enterprise War seems to make the plot of the show more meaningful. My favorite Discovery novel so far.

After spending most of my teenage years reading Star Wars novels only to have Disney trash everything as "Legends", I was skeptical to read this. But I guess the authors of these Discovery tie-in novels are working with people who work on the show so they might be considered semi-canon?
I enjoyed it. Thought it was a little slow to start but finished the last half in a day.

There are times when I just want to read an adventure story, something that is familiar and fast paced, and this book is one of those.
If you've watched Discovery Series 1 and 2, you'll know the basic idea; where was the Enterprise during the Klingon War... well, this book explains it all and gives a fine adventure to boot. There is also, as there should be, the morals of the Federation under-pinning it all and the final resolution, if not unexpected, was interesting!
A lot of time passes in this book, over a year, and sometimes I am not sure the true effects of isolation were ever really explored - however, that's a minor, minor thing compared the story of six civilisations locked into war!

This is an amazingly rich tale. Rich in detail, drama, action and wonderfully unique for a Trek adventure. The new alien species' are fantastic and the scenarios are very dramatic.
Written and narrated exceptionally well.

Filling in the blanks of Pike’s _Enterprise_ up to the start of season two of ST: DIS. Not a bad romp, and helps to flesh out some of the secondary characters we see in Pike’s crew.
