Really helpful in learning Git, from the very basics to advanced functionality. Explains the concepts of how Git works very clearly.
This is a great introduction to git. I had used git a little bit in the past, but I'm now responsible for helping my team at work move from Subversion to git and this has been a great resource (including showing how to migrate Subversion repositories to git while preserving history). The book teaches git well and will also, I think, be an excellent reference.
The book is fairly short -- 9 chapters, around 300 pages. The first three chapters are pretty good for a beginner / intermediate user of git. The fourth chapter talks about server-side usage of git (including gitweb, github.com, etc.) and is pretty information sparse. The fifth chapter gives vague suggestions of git workflows in a team. The sixth and seventh chapters go into a little more detail about intermediate git usage and customization. The eighth chapter is entirely devoted to git interacting with svn and perforce. And the 9th chapter goes into incredible detail of git as a "content-addressable filesystem" with some decent examples and explanations of git internals and the .git directory. Overall this book is so unfocused as to not be worth buying for your shelf.
Everything you need to know, and a good bit more. Highly recommended
Done with the basics. Will read more if needed (at 20%).
I learned a lot from this book, even though I considered my git knowledge up to intermediate level before starting. Some chapters are very boring, that's why I almost abandoned it. The last two or three chapters where completely new to me and I liked them (you get to know git internals, the plumbing commands and the way objects are stored).
I would recommend this to people trying to learn git.
