I read this book when I was nine and it has stayed with me forever ... it seems like just another semi-Edwardian story of children getting up to mischief in a big house. There are stories of Tom and Hugh not quite making it to boarding-school on time, the adventures they have together ... but there is something much darker behind this story. The ending is truly haunting and deeply unsettling. I have never forgotten Margaret.
