This was soo good i was so intrigued until the last page and I cannot wait to read the next one
If the MC was not spending most of the chapters talking about how much she hated shoes and dresses I think I might have been able to enjoy the plot more.

One thing I enjoyed about this book is that Sawyer was a strong, intelligent, funny, and emotionally balanced female main character who had a clear objective and the story didn't throw in the need for a boy crush and all that unnecessary fluff for the sake of trying to force a romance in a mystery. Instead, it was centered on the main objective of Sawyer figuring out a mystery that allowed for some interesting side characters to bring color to this nicely paced story. As far-fetched as some of the events of the story were, it still was believable for this world that was created and I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

This book is thoroughly okay, being the equivalent of a teen drama where twists sometimes happen for the sake of it happening. Aside from one point below, I don't have too much to say.
Having read the sequel first by mistake, I can safely say that it is better than this book but at least this book filled in a few gaps of knowledge I was missing for it to make sense. I think both books could have benefitted from being a slightly longer standalone, but I suppose the gimmick of cutting between in media res and flashbacks wouldn't have worked as well.
I will say Campbell was the stand out character to me and I wish she continued being more tricksy in the sequel as she did in this book.

I was honestly on board for what was happening until the words "pregnancy pact" were said because what the actual hell are we doing. The south is SO weird, why are we just creating problems for fun? The characters in this were likeable, and I loved that there was no familial tension really between Lily and Sawyer but idk I was kinda rooting for walker and sawyer. The mom (Eleanor) is so annoying, as proven by the goddamn pregnancy pact, and I hate her. I understand why she lied, but also what the fuck. I think all in all, this book was just a little too surface level for my taste, and hopefully that changes in the 2nd one.
I like Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ stuff so much however I really believe this is the worst thing she’s written so far. It’s not bad by any means but falls so flat compared to everything else she’s done (esp the masterpiece that is the naturals).
