I found this book SO well done. The first person writing style with our ridiculously unreliable narrator is really engaging and made me think about situations in ways I never would have otherwise. It was frustrating (in a good way) to read through June's obsessive and twisted paths of logic and reasoning, and to realize things like the fact that

she would often name white authors/actors/people in general directly before or after referring to POC as things like "that Asian lady" or similar.

Throughout the book, it is also evident that

June does have experiences to dive into in which she is a victim. Her relationship with her mom and her assault are both experiences that would garner attention and sympathy, yet she seemingly chooses to ignore these things in favour of villifying asian people and complaining that because she is white, nobody will read her stories.

I passed over this book for a while because I assumed it was going to be a challenging book about experiencing racism and not a fun read. I was very wrong and was blown away by how awful the main character was, but I couldn't look away. A real page turner for sure!

I could not put this book down. Seeing how Junes perspective and outlook changed as she morphed into ‘Juniper’ turned her from a self conscious aspiring writer into an insufferable best seller, and finally to a jaded, victim mindset, guilt ridden woman. Viewing the world through her lens and FEELING IT CHANGE made me feel deeply disappointed in her, but then watching her downfall, was juuuuust a little bit satisfying because of it. I mean, being so self serving while the body is STILL WARM???? K.

This book has a lot of racist and xenophobic themes within and the author is able to drive her point home. So many parts made me gag at how obtuse and ignorant Juniper was.

There are so many stories being told at the same time.

The satire is palpable.

It’s very well done.

this one’s a thinker just like babel (still my favorite Kuang book) and i would love to see a full analysis of the layers to this story. if you are interested in the complexities of diversity and the way that it is commodified in many industries/cancel culture/the thought process of someone who is so audacious in their appropriation but also always has a justification then this is the book for you. also love knowing all the spots in dc that juniper goes to :)

this one was hard to read, but in a good way. kuang managed to portray issues like cultural appropriation, yellowfacing, „cancel culture“, victim blaming, and so much more in a way that didn‘t feel forced for the most part, but very realistically. the ending really completed and perfected it all. i cried and i laughed and i gasped. it was a lot, but i really enjoyed it because it was so spot on

One of the most thrilling pieces of literary fiction I've ever read. I was so engrossed in this story that I could physically not put it down. Couldn't imagine that this book won't be cemented in history as the perfect piece to analyse the current state of the publishing industry and social media.

wow, Wow, WOW!!

This descent into madness with echoes of Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart grips you by the throat from the very first page and sends you hurtling along a narrative that leaves you not only shocked at everyone's actions and audacity but guessing at the many ways it could possibly end... That is, until the actual ending knocks you right on your ass. Did June just lose her mind after watching Athena die so horribly and the whole book is just a tortured fever dream she's having while on a grippy sock vacation?? Has Athena actually come back as a ghost to haunt June?? You'll have to read the whole thing to find out because Kuang's brilliant prestidigitation in the form of an incredibly unreliable narrator keeps us focused on one thing while the truth sneaks up behind us, just waiting to push us down the stairs.

I pretty much hated all the MCs in this book, which is a new thing for me... But Kuang does an amazing job of capturing what it's like to be a white woman caught up in a maelstrom of her own making, within a cut-throat industry that's all about that superficial diversity. I was going through an array of emotions, getting sucked into June's just as much as my own were taking over. Yellowface just left me shaking my head and muttering, "wtf... why would you even do that??" about everyone in it.

I had a buddy read going on and it was so much fun because not only were we able to riff off each other as we moved through the book at relatively the same pace, but my reading partner really made me step back and look at things differently.
