I enjoyed New York, although not as much as some of Rutherfurd's other books. And I really, really missed having the genealogy in the front. I kept wanting to refresh my memory on who was who, and couldn't.

As much as I adore the city, I really wanted to love the novel - but the novel was quite a disappointment. I will not be rushing out to read more of Mr. Rutherford's works. I found his writing to be average (actually, worse than average - sentences ended in prepositions - example: "That's where she was working at." REALLY???). Not to mention the entirety of the 1940's was inexplicably absent from this historical survey. I agree with other reviewers who complain about the lack of diversity in this novel. Rather than following two families through several centuries, I would rather have read about many different families and their various experiences of the city through that time. It was quite an effort to get through an 800+ page novel that I thought was only "ok". Not quite sure how (or why) I did that, honestly.
