The story reminded me of other favorite middle grade books, but this one didn't have the light heartedness that I look for. Not recommended for highly sensitive young readers.

I really enjoyed and loved this book even though it may be written for a younger audience I found it really entertaining. Seriously, I loved this storyline and how well written this book was. A bit embarrassed for how much I liked this book even though its a children book but I will still recommend it! :)

The Art of Overthrowing Tyrants
"The Book of Stolen Dreams" is somewhat reminiscent of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket. Firstly because the reader is directly addressed in some instances and then, of course, because of the "unfortunate events" and the way they are dealt with.
Cozy words like piano, library, flower bouquet and hot chocolate (even if it doesn't taste very good) are mixed with the gloomy reality of everyday life.
The book definitely refers to many atrocities (murder, torture, labour camps, etc.) and one senses a direct connection to German World War II history. Towards the end, this is further clarified by the choice of names for some of the protagonists. However, the funnier elements and the fictional setting always lighten things up a bit and make the book less heavy for the reader.  This certainly makes the book well suited to stimulate conversations with children about such topics (about historical events or the courage to do the right thing and stand up against injustice, for example).
Even though I think a little more magic would not have hurt the story, I am generally very pleased that the author also trusts his younger readers to be able to take a piece of truth.
The author also repeatedly presents the complexity of people. For example, some characters may be morally questionable, but their reasons are understandable. Other times, a character is somewhat off-putting by their behaviour, but turns out to be actually helpful. And then again, someone recognises their faulty evaluations.
Actually, my only criticism is that the story is too straightforward and everything, with few exceptions, happens exactly as one would expect. By this I don't mean that nothing ever goes wrong, rather that it goes wrong exactly as you would imagine. So there are only a few surprises overall, but at the same time this creates a smooth reading flow.

This wasn't necessarily bad, it just wasn't what I expected; I was looking forward to more fantasy elements.
