Fortunately, the Milk

This, this was just the most epic book I have read this year. It was cute, fluffy and it combined Aliens, Natives, Pirates, Dinosaurs, Dwarves, Wumpires and of course the Milk and so much more in one complete insane, wonderful story!

The images in the book really complete the story and make it even more funny. I love to see the characters, to see imagination turn real with these pictures. The Natives were funny, though I was shivering at the image of one with his ears being one big hole and stretched out. *shivers*

Other than that, it was wonderful, and I will be sure to buy this book for my collection. Thank you Neil Gaiman!

Illustrations would get **** stars.

I will be soon reading the Chris Riddell version of this book. :)

Fortunately, the Milk

This, this was just the most epic book I have read this year. It was cute, fluffy and it combined Aliens, Natives, Pirates, Dinosaurs, Dwarves, Wumpires and of course the Milk and so much more in one complete insane, wonderful story!

It was a bit confusing considering that there are 2 different books, same story, but different artists and also slightly different titles (Fortunately, the Milk and Fortunately, the Milk. . .. I was already wondering what happened to Chris Riddell's style of drawing. And then I found this: http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2013/08/fortunately-book-explained.html
Even Neil Gaiman was a bit confused.

So of course I had to read and buy the Chris Riddell version! And what an improvement. Sorry to the other illustrator, your work was also lovely, but nothing can tip Chris Riddel's art. It was just wonderful and beautiful, and also it was funny to see how much the father looked like Neil Gaiman.

It was a wonderful book, and the illustrations will get a *****+ stars (if only I could do that!). Thanks Neil Gaiman, thanks Chris Riddell! Hope you two will continue working together for a long time.

If you have children, buy this book and read it to them. Or let them read it themselves. If you don't have children, buy this book and read it anyway.

Gaiman has crafted a wonderful tale of a father who goes out one morning to buy milk for his children's cereal and disappears for much longer than expected. When he finally returns home, his children are, of course, curious as to where he's been and why it took so long just to get milk. Surely, he ran into a friend on the way home and spent too long wasting time.

Not so! says the father. What really happened, he assures his son and daughter, was a journey that involves alien abduction, pirates, a stegosaurus and his time-traveling Floaty-Ball-Person-Carrier (that's a hot air balloon to us "future" folks), angry volcano gods, and ponies. And that's only the first half of the story.

Gaiman pokes good-natured fun at "handsome, misunderstood" vampires, vampires with bad European accents, lawn flamingos, commemorative plates, and never once lets this colorful, quirky narrative sag. There is time travel, there are temporal anomalies, and there are space police of a surprising nature that is sure to delight, all of which combine for one heck of a journey that may or may not result in the end of the universe as we know it.

(Whew! What an adventure! It's almost too amazing to be true!)

"Fortunately, the Milk," is a great read for all ages, illustrated (for American readers) by the magnificent Skottie Young. Buy it for your kids, and be prepared to enjoy it every bit as much as they will.
