Fence, vol. 5: Rise

I think I liked this volume a lot more than the previous ones - there were a lot of cute moments (Bobby and Dante are so cute!!) with a lot more cutesy/chibi artwork thrown in (which is different from previous volumes, but I kind of liked it). I'm also really starting to warm up to the characters from King's Row (and I think they're all really starting to warm up to each other as well), and I like that we get to learn more about fencing (like the flick!).

The pace is still quite slow, and I don't know how much longer I can tolerate the slow burn...

“I’ll get better so that you don’t feel like you’re wasting your time. Then we can fence together and I’ll challenge you to the limit. So you’d better get ready.”

There’s finally a new Fence volume!! I read the first four volumes two years ago and was so ready to continue the story!! Fence Vol 5. follows the team as they attend their first training camp, where they meet fencers from some of the other schools. I loved the setting, especially as it took them away from their school and into a new environment. The camp is all about learning to improve and deal with a variety of fencers, who each have their own techniques. I loved that Bobby – despite not making it in the team – becomes their manager and is allowed to come as well 😊

I loved all the character dynamics. I really missed them and was delighted to see more of the banter and rivalries again. Apart from loving the Bobby-Nicholas friendship, I always love seeing more of Nicholas and Seiji’s dynamic!! The tension and contrast between them are one of my favorite things about the comics, they play off each other so well! Nicholas is struggling to make it through the camp, as technique is his big weakness and keeps him stuck at the bottom of the ladder. He’s got good instincts, but cannot incorporate the more technical aspects without overthinking them. It’s tough to be one of the lowest-ranked fencers, but this is Nicholas’ chance to improve and become a better rival to Seiji 😉 Meanwhile Seiji is struggling with being *too* good and not having anyone there to challenge him to become better. His past defeat at the hands of Jesse is also still haunting him. Side Note, but I loved that one conversation where Nicholas ranked rivals above friends – that tells you everything you need to know about him 😂

“Should I be jealous that he’s your new rival?”

IN CONCLUSION.Fence Vol 5. was worth the wait and a great continuation of the comics! Set at training camp, it shows all the fencers trying to improve and confronting their weaknesses. Nicholas and Seiji’s dynamic is amazing as usual, even as both of them are struggling with different things. I cannot wait to see more of them, as their dynamic is slowly evolving throughout the volumes!

As always, these volumes go by too fast!!! So thankful for all the hard work that I know goes into making them - I am still desperate for more.

Loved seeing more development between Nicholas and Seiji, as they grow more comfortable with each other. I also loved learning more about Seiji and Jesse's history... DRAMAAAA!
