I absolutely loved this duology. It was so engaging and it made me laugh, cry, and rage in equal measure. The story caught my heartstrings in many ways, and the writing was very good at putting me directly in Alyssa's shoes.

Truly my only wish is that they would have gone more into the species differences. The book took a very Star Trek approach to aliens - they look different but are basically humans socially and physiologically in the ways that matter. Don't get me wrong, I love Star Trek deeply, and I enjoyed the varying appearances of all the characters - I just think it would have been fun to see a bit more world-building for that aspect.

I will definitely be rereading these!!

Thrilling conclusion! I refuse to give spoilers, but be prepared for anyone to go.
Will our heroes survive the final battle? Will the 'verse? Only time will tell. Plus another inevitable double cross, but you've seen that one coming.

The audiobook is good but I had to DNF when Alyssa didn't kill Edgar. Like, this is why I don't read much YA anymore. I wanted to see him die and her have to deal with the aftermath. Or her kill him, get away with it, help someone else get on the throne, and then struggle with confessing. Something other than, boo-hoo I don't want to be a murderer even though he killed her in cold blood in front of me for the throne and ISN'T GOING TO FACE ANY OTHER CONSEQUENCE. I'm so filled with rage tbh. I finished the first book - TORE through it - because it is SO GOOD. Really disappointed, like if you're going to decide not to kill him do it before getting in that situation, decide. Fine, I'm going to work with the prime families to prove he did it and get someone else on the throne, get into the politics I've always avoided. Just, HATE this direction (personally. It's still a great story if you want a purely good hero one-dimensional character).
