It took me a while to get into this book but after a fair bit I started to get really invested in the Stephanides family. Don’t expect twist and turns every two pages, but expect instead great character development, a very unique coming of age story and the traumas a family keeps dragging with it. I recommend if you’re in the mood for reflection and digging deep.

There was a lot I didn’t like about this book. First and foremost, the author of this book is not intersex or transgender. He is a cisgender male. I don’t appreciate the fact that he would write such a long winding narrative about an intersex person without experiencing it himself. He said that he wanted to explore the inner workings and emotions of an intersex person with this book; he had read a 19th century autobiography by an intersex person and felt dissatisfied with the discussion of the intersex individuals emotional state.  But how would you know their emotional state without experiencing this gender identity? The author also failed to interview intersex people about their life experiences while conducting research for the novel, which doesn’t sit right with me. Second, the discussion and depiction of incest was icky. I don’t know what more I can say about that.  I don’t think that Eugenides could get away with something like this in 2021, but it seems he met great acclaim in 2002.

A brilliantly written book about a member of a group often overlooked, even in queer communities. Rich storytelling, deeply personal anecdotes and an important message are the core of what makes this book so good.
