Not the greatest of Hardy's novels by a log stretch but certainly more light hearted than his normal. Deeply funnny at moments, the underlying tragedy builds but never becomes overbearing. I love Hardy but stopped reading him because it is such a depressing experience; this was almost a compromise: not quite on perfect form but I won't be crying myself to sleep tonight.

I really enjoy this author, and this was the 6th book of his that I read. It was slow going for me through 3/4 of the story, but the last 1/4 was much better and redeemed it for me.

This is okay but also somewhat bland. There are a few lines that hint at Hardy's later wit and writing skill, but I think that there's a reason more people know Tess of the D'Urbervilles than A Pair of Blue Eyes
